Regarding Open Data the Young Academies' position is that it must be supported and implemented throughout all research disciplines. However an effective implementation of Open Data should be made step by step as it requires large investments, a specilized infrastructure and adapted regulations. The benefits and the investments needed to achieve implementation of Open Data should be carefully evaluated and weighed against each other at every step.

The Young Acadedmies welcome and support the Europeans Commission's commitment to make Open Access (OA) to a cornerstone in its Open Science policy. However, they also urge policymakers to ensure sustainable and transparent funding models for OA publishing of publicly funded research, where scientific excellence should always go before profit.
