On 5 March Young Academy of Sweden had the opportunity to arrange the fourth seminar on our tour with career seminars. This time we visited Lund University where we co-hosted the event with the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation. Career paths for young scholars were discussed in great depth and the need for national coordination was noted.

About a hundred young scholars had registered for the seminar. They had the opportunity to listen to and discuss with a prominent panel including Torbjörn von Schantz (Vice-Chancellor at Lund University) Stacey Ristinmaa Sörensen (Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Research Infrastructure) and Johannes Persson (Dean at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology). The panelists noted that it is challenging for the University to take a long-term responsibility for career paths and opening permanent positions for young scholars when the Government funding is often short-term. Members in the audience asked how they could continue the dialogue with the management after the seminar, Mia Rönnmar (Dean at the Faculty of Law), responded that she would be happy to take this on since she is responsible for writing a proposal on how Lund University may implement Associate Senior Lecturer (Biträdande universitetslektorat).
– The more career seminars we arrange, the more it becomes clear that there is an immediate need for a national dialogue on how the Universities may implement the Associate Senior Lecturer. For example, there are many similarities between the medical faculties in Uppsala and Lund and it would seem reasonable that the criteria are similar across the country within a scientific discipline, said Kristian Pietras, Young Academy of Sweden’s Chair.
Previous stops on the Academy’s career seminar tour have been at Uppsala University, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. On March 22 we arrange the next seminar, at Linköping University together with Junior Faculty.
