On October 8, Dr Sofia Lodén and Dr Philippe Tassin were invited to the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS) to give an inspirational lecture on the topic of career paths within the academy.

Sofia Lodén and Philippe Tassin gave presenations at ISDRS.

The lecture was arranged within the framework of ISDRS’ international mentorship program and had a focus on internationalization. Dr Sofia Lodén and Dr Philippe Tassin shared their experiences on how they have shaped their careers and what experiences have been extra challenging and rewarding, including smart strategies to navigate the international academic landscape.

To me, ISDRS’ mentorship program is a wonderful initiative. I think it is extremely important to have both formal and informal mentors. A young scholar should not be afraid to ask for help. Another advice that I gave the participants was to discuss their research with scholars from totally different fields – that has both inspired and helped me in my career, said Sofia Lodén, Associate Professor in French at Stockholm University.

Every academic career is unique. But today we learnt that Sofia and I have a few things in common. We have both good mentors that we can consult when making career choices; we have both experience from multiple countries; and we enjoy what we do. We hope that our stories have inspired the participants in the ISDRS mentorship programme, said Philippe Tassin, Associate Professor in Physics at Chalmers University of Technology.
