On 28 July the Young Academy of Sweden had the great pleasure to welcome a delegation from the Young Academy of Korea (Y-KAST) to Stockholm for a bi-lateral workshop.
The Korean and Swedish delegations, front row: Myung-Chul Lee, President, The Korean Academy of Science and Technology and Anna Wetterbom, Chief Executive Officer, Young Academy of Sweden.
It was an intense day full of interesting presentations and fruitful discussions. We learned about the research systems in our respective countries and talked about challenges for young researchers, gender equality, science communication with the public, and how to inspire children to pursue a career in science. In particular we found that young scientists in both countries face similar challenges in securing a tenure position.
Since Y-KAST started its operations only this year we also talked a lot about how our respective academies are organized and work. The election process is crucial for all science academies and the Young Academy of Sweden shared their experiences on how to transition from the first years when the mother academy was responsible to establishing a process owned by the young academy.
The bi-lateral workshop was a great success and it is anticipated that the connections between the academies will continue to strengthen over time through further collaboration.
