MIRAI – Connecting Swedish and Japanese universities through research, education and innovation is a three-year project with the main aim to foster academic collaboration between Sweden and Japan. At the MIRAI seminar in November the young academies from Japan and Sweden participated.

– The MIRAI is an unique initiative in promoting international mobility as a way of fostering innovation, in which young researchers play an important role. But the benefits and burdens that this role generates need to be discussed from the cross-cultural perspective. So, we are very happy that Dr. Kazuyoshi Nishijima from the Young Academy of Japan could join us and contribute to these discussions, says Ewa Machotka, Associate Professor in Art and Visual Culture of Japan at Stockholm University and Young Academy of Sweden member.

– I think we had a very interesting exchange of experiences and thoughts across the two Young Academies about barriers to and solutions for enhanced mobility and internationalization in academia, says Hanne Fjelde, Peace and Conflict researcher at Uppsala University and Young Academy of Sweden member.
During 11-14 November, the final MIRAI seminar takes place in Stockholm/Uppsala, Sweden, bringing together early career researchers, university management, funding agencies and decision makers to continue discussions about future joint academic collaboration in the fields of Ageing, Materials Science and Sustainability. The Young Academies of Sweden and Japan contributed with the session “Young academies – catalysts in the research ecosystem” focusing on mobility and internationalization.
